Introduction to Weathering: How to Make Your Scale Models Look Real
There is a distinct moment in every modeller’s journey where a completed kit looks just a bit too clean. You’ve spent hours perfectly assembling a 1:35 scale WWII tank or a 1:72 fighter jet, but sitting on your workbench, it looks like a shiny plastic toy fresh off a factory line rather than a battle-hardened machine.
That is where weathering comes in.
Weathering is the art of applying paints, washes, and pigments to simulate real-world wear, tear, rust, and grime. If you've been terrified of ruining your hard work with a bad paint job, don't worry. Today, we are breaking down the three easiest, most foolproof weathering techniques that will instantly bring your models to life.
The Golden Rule: Protect Your Base Coat First
Before you touch your model with any weathering products, you must apply a clear gloss varnish (acrylic coat) over your main paint job and decals.
This creates a smooth, protective barrier. It allows your weathering washes to flow smoothly into the details, and crucially, it allows you to wipe away any mistakes using a clean cotton bud and thinner without lifting your original base paint.
Technique 1: The Pin Wash (Popping the Details)
A "pin wash" is an ultra-thinned enamel or oil-based paint that is dropped directly into the recessed panel lines, rivets, and engine grilles of a model.
-
How it works: Because the wash is highly fluid, capillary action pulls it along the crevices automatically. The dark shadow left behind instantly replicates natural depth, highlighting the crisp mold details of high-end kits.
-
How to apply it: Use a fine-tipped detail brush, dip it into your wash, and gently touch it to a panel line or rivet. Watch the paint sprint along the line. Let it dry for 20 minutes, then take a cotton bud lightly dampened with mineral spirits or enamel thinner and gently wipe away any excess smudge on the surface.
Technique 2: Dry Brushing (Catching the Light)
While a wash darkens the deep recesses, dry brushing does the exact opposite - it highlights the raised edges, bolts, and sharp corners that would naturally catch the sunlight or get rubbed bare by a crew's boots.
-
How to apply it: Take a flat, stiff-bristled brush and dip it into a lighter shade of your base colour (or a metallic silver/steel if you are replicating bare metal armour).
-
The Critical Step: Wipe almost all the paint off the brush onto a piece of paper towel until the brush looks completely dry and leaves virtually no mark. Then, very gently flick the brush back and forth across the raised details of your model. The microscopic amount of paint left on the bristles will catch the edges, creating a stunning 3D effect.
Technique 3: Mud, Dust, and Smoke with Pigments
Weathering powders and pigments are actual ground-down earth tones used to create realistic accumulations of dry dust, caked mud, or black exhaust soot on tank tracks and aircraft exhaust ports.
-
How to apply it: For dry dust or soot, simply use an old paintbrush to scrub a tiny amount of black or sand-colored pigment directly onto the model.
-
For heavy mud: Mix a brown pigment with a tiny drop of acrylic gloss varnish and static grass to create a thick, gritty paste. Dab it onto the lower hull and tracks of your military vehicles using an old toothbrush for an incredibly realistic, splattered battlefield finish.
Beginner-Friendly Weathering Checklist
| Effect Desired | Product Type to Use | Where to Apply |
| Panel line depth & shadows | Enamel Wash (Dark Brown/Black) | Rivets, panel lines, engine grilles |
| Sun-bleached highlights & bare metal | Light Acrylic Paint / Silver | Hatch edges, handles, sharp corners |
| Exhaust stains & muzzle soot | Black/Dark Grey Pigment Powder | Gun barrels, exhaust pipes |
| Caked mud & heavy track grime | Earth-toned Pigments + Binder | Tank tracks, lower chassis, wheels |
