The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was a highly versatile fighter that entered US Navy service in the 1960s. The F-4J variant featured improved engines, avionics, and airframe modifications for enhanced performance. VF-102 “Diamondbacks,” known for their distinctive red diamond markings, operated the Phantom II from the decks of US aircraft carriers during the height of the Cold War. The squadron flew combat missions during the Vietnam War and played a key role in fleet defence, strike operations, and air superiority missions. The Phantom’s speed, range, and weapons capacity made it one of the most important fighters of its era, and the VF-102 Diamondbacks remain closely associated with its enduring legacy.
