About the Avia S-199

The Avia S-199 was developed in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War using remaining airframes and components from the Messerschmitt Bf 109 programme. Due to shortages of original engines, the aircraft was fitted with a different powerplant, resulting in altered handling characteristics compared to the wartime Bf 109.

Despite its limitations, the S-199 served with the Israeli Air Force during its early years and played a role in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, making it a historically significant aircraft in the transition from WWII aviation to post-war air forces.
