About the Fairey Gannet

The Fairey Gannet was developed in the late 1940s as a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare aircraft for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. Its most unusual feature was the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba engine, which effectively combined two turboprops driving contra-rotating propellers.

This innovative design allowed the Gannet to operate efficiently from aircraft carriers while carrying out long-duration patrols and submarine detection missions. The aircraft also featured folding wings and a large internal weapons bay for torpedoes and depth charges.

The AS.1 was the initial production variant, while the AS.4 introduced improvements in avionics and operational capability, extending the type’s service life.
