About the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley
The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was developed in the 1930s as part of the RAF’s expansion of its bomber force. Entering service in 1937, it was one of the RAF’s frontline bombers at the outbreak of the Second World War.
The Mk.V variant represented an improved production version, featuring enhanced engines and structural refinements that improved performance and operational capability. Whitleys were used extensively in early bombing raids over Germany and later in specialist roles such as maritime patrol and training.
Although eventually replaced by more capable heavy bombers such as the Lancaster and Halifax, the Whitley played a crucial role in establishing RAF Bomber Command’s early war operations.
