In 1976 the FIA, within the panorama of international motor racing, introduced a new Group 5, with specific rules, reserved for "special" production cars. The new regulations imposed a body width similar to that of series production, on which, however, it was possible to apply larger fenders in order to benefit from wider tracks and larger tyres. BMW participated in Group 5 competitions with a dedicated version of its new flagship model, the E21 "320". A new aerodynamic profile was created that integrated the large fenders and a powerful engine capable of delivering 300 hp was used. The car was successfully used by the official team of the Munich company and also formed the basis on which young up-and-coming drivers were trained.
