From the American General Motor CCKW-353 21/2 t 6x6 tactical transport truck, a special amphibious version was designed and built to meet the logistical needs of the landing units of the US Army in order to transfer loads directly and quickly from ships to the beach. The basic components were in fact the same as the GMC road truck with its 4,400 cm3 6-cylinder engine and three differentials with six-wheel drive. The DUKW was characterized by a welded hull, to make it amphibious, reinforced by horizontal ribs. Its strength was its extraordinary versatility and load capacity. It could carry 2,400 kg of payload or 25 fully equipped men. DUKWs were widely used in all theaters of war by the U.S. Army, Marines, and armed forces of several Allied countries. They made their effective contribution in the landings of Salerno, Anzio, Normandy during D-Day, both in Utah and Omaha, and on the beaches of the Pacific.
