During the African campaign, the British used Stuart tanks without their turrets as troop transport vehicles or as artillery tractors. It was later that to make up for the shortage of armored vehicles that Canadian General Guy Simonds ordered the field workshops to remove the cannon from the old M7 Priest self-propelled vehicles to convert them into vehicles used for the transport of infantry. The success of this operation soon spread among all the troops of the Commonwealth and soon every obsolete tank was transformed into Kangaroo, this is the name given to this type of conversion, which allowed the transport of fully equipped soldiers in combat trim directly to the front line. Defensive armament could vary depending on availability with .50 caliber or .30 caliber Browning machine guns up to the Boys anti-tank rifle.
