Introduced in 1961 as a new supersonic jet interceptor and fighter bomber, it soon cut its teeth over the jungles of Vietnam. Initially ordered by the US Navy it soon found use with the US Marine Corp and US Air Force. Once its utility was proven it became a popular aircraft found in the inventory of many countries and in many forms.
